Crops in, not yet time to order seeds and inputs. Maybe a bit of time for some reading. Here are a few articles & studies of interest to organic farming in NL:

1.  Morteza Haghiri is a prof at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College. He recently completed a study as follows:  M.Haghiri, Hobbs, J. E. and M. L. McNamara (2009), “Assessing Consumer Preferences for Organically Grown Fresh Fruit and Vegetables in Eastern New Brunswick,” International Food and Agribusiness Management Review, Vol.12, No.4, pp.81-100. It’s available online at: http://ageconsearch.umn.edu/bitstream/92556/2/20081039_Formatted.pdf

2. Katie Temple, known to many in NL -for her work with the NL Environment Network, recently completed a masters in rural planning & development at University of Guelph. Her research paper: “Growing in the bog: motivations, challenges and opportunities in the organic agriculture sector in Newfoundland and Labrador” has many interesting points for farmers. If you’re interested, leave me a comment, and I’ll see if I can get it on our website as a PDF.

3. Or…Check out latest issue of Rural Delivery (Dec.2010) “Food Sustainability Storms Newfoundland” by Alison Dyer for a great recap of ACORN-NL’s 1st Sustainable Farming Conference with interviews with Mark Wilson, Donna Bishop, Chris Peters and lots of photos!
